Lyme & Tick-borne Diseases Conference

8/28/2019 2:46:55 PM

Join Sussex County Community College and The Tick Squad on Saturday, Oct. 5, for an educational day promoting awareness about a common Northwest New Jersey (NWNJ) health issue: tick-borne diseases.

The NWNJ Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Conference, a free event, will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9-3 p.m. in Sussex’s Performing Arts Center on its main campus in Newton. The conference will appeal to professionals and community members alike who want to learn more about tick-borne diseases and how to help identify and protect against infection.

“It’s time to start working together to take action in our backyards and neighborhoods, our parks and natural areas, so that we may regain our ability to fully enjoy this beautiful part of the world we are blessed to live in,” said Sussex’s Agricultural Business and Horticultural Science Supervisor, Erin Collins, who will also be leading a presentation about community actions to manage the area’s tick population at the event.

According to data from the New Jersey Department of Health, Sussex County was ranked the fourth highest county in New Jersey when it came to several diagnosed Lyme disease cases in 2017. Neighbor Morris County took the top spot and Warren, and Hunterdon counties were also among the top diagnosed counties. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that actual numbers throughout the country are underreported. Other confirmed tick-borne illnesses in the area include the potentially fatal Powassan virus.

It is therefore paramount that members of the community understand the symptoms of Lyme disease, as well as other tick-borne diseases, to help identify them as early as possible.

With this in mind, Sussex and The Tick Squad will hold this special conference packed with presentations and informational sessions to help residents protect themselves and their loved ones.
