Job Description

The Math Center Coordinator, a grant-funded position, develops exemplary academic support services that provide all students an opportunity to build on their math skills, to achieve success across disciplines. This individual will supervise the Math Center on campus, working in a collaborative and complimentary way, with the Director of Library/Tutor Coordinator. The coordinator will focus on training tutors, and with working collaboratively with the designated faculty liaison for mathematics, as well as other full-time and adjunct math faculty, to keep a finger on the pulse of experiences and feedback from faculty, in order to best structure support for our students. This individual will supervise any student workers or staff as assigned to the Math Center throughout the academic year, including during the summer. This individual also contributes to the study-hall services for various student populations. Finally, this individual may be asked to contribute to various research initiatives, through Skylands Research Institute, along with fulltime math faculty, in order to continuously improve support services to our students across a wide continuum of math courses and academic readiness.

  4. Works with the Assistant Dean of Academic Learning Resources to support broader learning initiatives
  5. Creates focused student presentations as part of the lunch & Learn initiative in order to support the classroom experience
  6. Collaborates with the Department Math Center Liaison to ensure the Center is meeting the needs of the College.
  7. Collaborates with the Assistant Dean on any budget needs for the math center.
  8. Publicizes the Math Center through working with faculty from all departments and student support areas.
  9. Manages regular in person and year-round hours including day and evening hours.
  10. Works with faculty from all STEM departments to develop math 'instruction for students across the curriculum.
  11. Hires and develops peer-math coaches by posting ads, reviewing qualifications, interviewing and working with the SCCC Human Resources Department. the Tutor Coordinator and the Assistant Dean.
  12. Oversees peer-math coaches including initial and continuous training, organizing work schedules and conducting periodic evaluations.
  13. Keep records for students, faculty, and administrators.
  14. Participates in various recruitment and retention initiatives and events, including College Open House, Meet the Clubs events, New Student Orientation events and recruitment endeavors
  15. Participates in a variety of committees and Advisory groups
  16. Works with different student populations to develop study hall and provide resources unique to different groups.
  17. Utilizes data to guide interventions and monitors effectiveness to support student retention
  18. Complete purchasing requisitions for the Math Center.
  19. Completes assessments of the Math Center.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

Master’s degree in Mathematics or a related field.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience in teaching mathematics at a higher education level
  • Knowledge of Math Center pedagogy
  • Knowledge of theories of learning
  • Knowledge of research methods
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods
  • Experience in developing and evaluating materials
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work
  • Detail oriented

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in a Math Center, adulty learning environment or a tutoring center for developing math skills preferred.

Supervises Student Coaches and any part time staff specifically assigned to the Math Center.

Salary:  $25.00 per hour
