Sussex County Community College’s LACE (Learning At College Experience) Program celebrated its 9th Annual Pumpkin Float at the Horton Pond on October 29th, marking a significant milestone in its 18th year of empowering adults with special needs. This beloved event continues to unite students from Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, including students who have moved across the country, who still participate virtually.
The event featured carved pumpkins, prepared by LACE students, who delivered them to the pond before class. These pumpkins were showcased on floats constructed a decade ago using plywood donated by Home Depot, crafted by Kittatinny Regional High School’s Wood Shop class, and painted by Hampton Cub Scout Pack 96, Den 5.
The event was organized by Hopatcong Defiance Engine Company #3 in partnership with the LACE staff. Logistics were handled by the College’s Facilities Department and a dedicated staff memeber. Together, they orchestrated the enchanting display of lit pumpkins, creating a mesmerizing “train” across the pond—a tradition cherished and upheld each year.
Festivities allowed students to engage in team activities such as the Cracker Stack Race, Donut Fishing Contest, Candy Corn Race, and creating a Toilet Paper Mummy. Individual pursuits included Halloween-themed worksheets, crafting 3D paper pumpkins, and assembling Q-Tip skeletons. The day was complete with hot dogs, snacks, and perfect weather.
A poignant moment highlighted the event with the dedication of a memorial bench by the Horton Pond in honor of Molly Buyer, a LACE student who passed away in February 2023. Surrounded by family and friends, including SCCC President Dr. Cory Homer and LACE Program Coordinator Patti Nugent, the community gathered to celebrate Molly’s memory. Her father, Dr. David Buyer, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the tribute.
