The following information is being provided to summarize the way in which the New Jersey Worker’s Compensation Act works and to clarify the procedures which should be followed when a work-related illness or injury occurs. Please be sure to follow the procedures detailed under Section III in the event an employee sustains a work-related illness or injury.
I. The New Jersey Worker’s Compensation Act may provide an employee who sustains a work-related illness or injury with three benefits: medical treatment with an authorized provider; temporary disability benefits and payment for a residual permanent disability.
II. A work-related illness or injury is generally defined as one which occurs “in the course of the person’s employment”.
III. At the time of a work-related injury/illness the following should occur:
- At the time of the illness/injury, or as soon as possible thereafter, an incident report should be completed and forwarded to the Human Resources Department. An incident report should be completed even if the employee does not require medical care.
- If an illness/injury requiring medical care occurs during regular business hours, the employee should contact the Human Resources Department to report the incident.

- If the injured/ill employee wants to see an MD within the approved worker’s compensation network, the HR Department will arrange through the worker’s compensation carrier for the first available appointment.
- Work-related illnesses/injuries should not be processed through the employee’s private medical insurance plan or through a spouse’s medical plan.
- If an illness/injury requiring medical care occurs after regular business hours, the employee should seek care in the emergency room of either Newton Memorial Hospital (175 High Street, Newton) or St. Claire’s Hospital (20 Walnut Street, Sussex) care and notify the Human Resources Department of the illness/injury as soon as possible. Once an emergency no longer exists, subsequent treatment must be with a network provider.
The employee should advise the provider that their illness/injury is work related and that bills should be sent to

- If the employee does not want to utilize a provider from the approved panel of providers, a worker’s compensation medical case manager must be contacted through the Human Resources Department, prior to medical treatment.
Unauthorized non-emergency care with a health care provider not on the approved list or in network will not be paid under worker’s compensation.
